Newlings Terms of Use
Last updated: 23 September 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Mehmet Ali Ustaoglu, an individual developer based in Turkey ("we" or "us"), about your use of the Newlings app. By using Newlings you accept these terms. If you are 13 to 17, or under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must also accept them for you (see section 2). If you do not accept them, please do not use the app. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.
1. What Newlings is
Newlings helps people learn English by reading short science, technology and art news stories at six levels, from A1 to C2, with word cards, flashcards, quizzes and vocabulary reviews. Newlings is a language learning tool, not a news service.
2. Who can use Newlings
- You must be at least 13 years old to use Newlings. Newlings is not directed at children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has used it, we delete the data we can find, as our Privacy Policy explains.
- If you are 13 to 17, or under the age of majority where you live, you may use Newlings only with the permission of a parent or guardian. Your parent or guardian accepts these terms for you and is responsible for your use of the app.
- If you are under the age at which the law where you live lets you agree on your own to the processing of your data online (for example between 13 and 16 in the European Union, depending on the country, and 13 in the United Kingdom), a parent or guardian must also give or approve the consents in the app, as our Privacy Policy explains.
- A parent or guardian can delete a young person's data at any time in the app (Me, Account, Delete account and data) or by writing to hello@newlings.app.
3. Your account
- You can use Newlings without creating an account; the app signs you in with an anonymous id.
- If you use the app only anonymously and lose your phone or delete the app, we may not be able to recover your progress, because we cannot tell which anonymous progress is yours. You can link a Google or Apple account to keep it.
- You are responsible for the security of the Google or Apple account you link.
- You can delete your account and data at any time in Me, Account, Delete account and data.
4. How the stories are made
- Each story is rewritten with AI from facts reported by a named source, and it is checked before it is published.
- Every story names its source and links to the original report. The original reporting belongs to its publisher; read it for the full and authoritative account. The link opens the publisher's website in a browser inside the app; that website is not ours, and its own terms and privacy policy apply there.
- Some images are generated with AI and are labelled as such.
- Simplified stories leave out detail and can contain mistakes despite our checks. Do not rely on Newlings stories for medical, legal, financial, safety or other important decisions.
- Word levels, definitions, translations, quizzes and level estimates are learning aids and may be inaccurate.
- If you find a mistake, email hello@newlings.app or use our support page at newlings.app/support.
5. Word list credits
Vocabulary levels use the CEFR-J Wordlist Version 1.5 (Yukio Tono, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies; free for research and commercial use with citation) and the Octanove Vocabulary Profile C1/C2 1.0 (Octanove Labs; licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0), distributed by Open Language Profiles. These sources are not responsible for inaccuracies in Newlings. The app lists these credits and the open source licences it uses on the About screen.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- copy, scrape, republish or sell the stories, word cards or quizzes outside the app;
- try to access other learners' data or our systems in ways the app does not offer;
- interfere with the app, overload it, or reverse engineer it, except where the law allows;
- send us messages that are unlawful, abusive or contain other people's personal data;
- use the app in breach of any law.
7. Our content and rights
The app, its design, the rewritten stories, word cards, quizzes and illustrations belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable right to use the app for your own learning. News sources keep all rights in their original reporting. Open source components are licensed under their own terms, listed in the app.
8. Price
Newlings is free. If we add paid features, we will show their price, renewal and refund terms in the app and on the app store before you buy, and purchases will be handled by the app store.
9. Availability and changes
We may change, pause or stop features or the app. We try to publish new stories every day, but we do not promise that a story or feature will always be available.
10. Ending your use
You can stop using Newlings at any time and delete your data in the app. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, or if the law requires it.
11. Disclaimer
Newlings is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we do not promise that it will be error-free, uninterrupted or fit for a particular purpose. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that the law does not allow us to limit.
12. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for decisions you make based on story content;
- our total liability to you for all claims about the app is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or USD 50 if that is higher.
These limits do not apply to liability for intent or gross negligence, for death or personal injury, or to any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded by law.
13. App stores
If you downloaded Newlings from the Apple App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. Apple and Google are not responsible for the app, its content or its support, and have no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms and change the date at the top. We will tell you in the app before an important change takes effect. If you keep using Newlings after that, the new terms apply.
15. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Turkey. Disputes are decided by the courts and enforcement offices of Istanbul, Turkey. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may also bring a claim in the courts or consumer arbitration committees that those laws give you.
