Newlings Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026

This policy explains what information the Newlings app and the newlings.app website collect, why, how long it is kept, who processes it and how you can delete it. It describes the app from version 1.1, on iPhone, iPad and Android phones. We wrote it in plain English. If anything is unclear, email us at hello@newlings.app.

Who we are

Newlings is an app for people aged 13 and over who learn English by reading short science, technology and art news stories at their level. It is made and run by Mehmet Ali Ustaoglu, an individual developer based in Turkey, referred to as "we" or "us". We are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us at hello@newlings.app.

Summary

What we collect and why

Account and sign-in

DataWhy
Anonymous id: a random Firebase Authentication id created when you first open the app. It is not linked to your name or email. Firebase Authentication also records when the id was created and when it last signed in.To keep your progress and make sure only you can read and change it.
Linked Google or Apple account (optional): the provider and the details it shares with us, such as your email address and name. Apple may share a private relay address instead of your email. Linking Apple is offered on iPhone and iPad. We show the name and email on the Account screen; our learner database records only which providers you linked, not your name or email. To keep your progress when you change phones and to open the same progress on another device.

Learner profile

DataWhy
Reading level (A1 to C2), your starting level, our estimate of your level with its confidence and reason, and when you last dismissed a level suggestionTo show stories at the right level and suggest a new level when your results show it.
Translation language (for example Turkish, or English definitions only); the app first sets it from the language of your deviceTo show word meanings in your language.
Reminder hour (or no reminder), from version 1.2.1 with its minute and the same time in UTC, and your device's time zone (for example Europe/Istanbul)To send the daily reminder at your local time, to set the time of the evening reminder, and to count your days and streak correctly.
Theme (system, light or dark)To show the app the way you like it.
App version, build and platform, the language of your device (for example tr or es, without country), and when the app was last opened (from version 1.2.1, also each time you come back to it, at most once every 15 minutes)To tell you when an update is needed, to keep older versions working, to decide which languages the app should support next, for the statistics described below and, from version 1.2.1, to hold back the daily reminder on a day on which you have already opened the app (see Daily reminder).

Learning activity

DataWhy
Placement answers: the question, the option you chose, whether it was correct and how long you tookTo place you at a level and to improve the placement test.
Saved words and the other words you tapped, with their state (seen, learning, known), review steps, next review dates and review answersTo show word cards, build your word list and schedule reviews.
Reads: which stories you opened and finished, at which level, the number of words, the time spent and your quiz scoreTo show what you have read, give reading XP and estimate your level.
Level flags: "Too hard" or "Too easy" on a story, and level switches inside a storyTo estimate your level and improve the stories.
Quiz answers: the question, your answer, whether it was correct and the time takenTo score quizzes and estimate your level.
Grammar cards (from version 1.2): which grammar card of which story and level you closed, its grammar form, how it ended (found, found with a hint, shown or left) and whenTo show which grammar forms you have met and finished.
XP, streak, streak freezes, daily goal, active days and badgesTo show your progress.
Feedback from test versions: test versions of the app up to 1.1.0 (15), shared with testers through TestFlight, could send feedback messages with Send feedback. A message holds the kind (problem, idea or something you like), your text, your level, the app version, platform and app language. From app version 1.1.0 (16), the app has no feedback form; to contact us, email hello@newlings.app or use our support page at newlings.app/support.To read and act on it. Our monitoring emailed us the first 200 characters of each new message. Feedback messages are stored with your learning data and deleted together with it; the email copies stay in our mailbox until we delete them.

This data is stored in our database and linked to your anonymous id. Your signed-in app and our backend functions (which score quizzes and reviews, count XP and streaks and estimate your level) read and change it. We can also see it in our control panel, which shows a short part of your id but not your name or email.

Statistics from our database

To learn whether Newlings helps people keep learning, our control panel counts how many learners come back one, seven and thirty days after they start, by the week they started and by the language of their device. The counts use the day your profile was created, your time zone, the language of your device and the days on which you opened a story, finished a quiz or earned XP. They are made from data the app keeps anyway, so they include you whether or not you allow usage statistics. The statistics show only totals, never a list of learners.

From version 1.2.1, the app also records each time it offers you notifications: where (after your first level, after an update, at the end of a story, on the quiz result, on Today or in Settings), what came of it (shown, turned on, permission refused, failed or Not now), your level, the day and the time. These records are kept in our database with your anonymous id, whether or not you allow usage statistics. We use them to learn which offers help learners turn on notifications, and to stop offering them where they do not help.

Usage statistics and crash reports (only if you allow them)

When you first open the app, it asks whether you allow usage statistics and crash reports, with Allow and Don't allow as equal choices. Firebase collects no usage statistics or crash reports before you answer, and none if you choose Don't allow. You can change your answer at any time with Share usage data and crash reports in Me, Settings. Your answer is kept on your phone, also when you sign out or delete your data. If you are younger than the age at which you can agree to this yourself, ask a parent or guardian before you choose Allow (see Children and young people).

If you allow them:

DataWhy
Firebase Analytics events: for example app opens, placement start and finish, level changes, opening and finishing a story, word taps, lookups and saves, quizzes, reviews and word games, listening (start, pause, moving by sentence and finish), searches (only the number of results) and shares, with details such as the story, the level and the word. Your anonymous id is used as the analytics user id and your level as a user property. Firebase Analytics also collects device and app information such as an app instance id (and, on iPhone and iPad, Apple's identifier for vendor), the device model, operating system, app version and language, and an approximate location (country, region and city) derived from your IP address. To understand which features help learners, find problems and decide what to build next. Never used for advertising.
Firebase Crashlytics reports: crash and error details (including errors when the app sets up the evening reminder), the device model, operating system, orientation, free memory and disk space, app version, a Crashlytics installation id and your anonymous idTo find and fix crashes.

If you later turn sharing off, the app stops collecting at once and deletes crash reports that were not sent yet. Your learning progress is still saved, because the app needs it to work.

Notifications

From version 1.2.1, one tap turns notifications on. The app offers it on its own screen, once after you choose your first level or once after you update, and on a short card at the end of a story, on the quiz result and on Today. The screen and the card say that new stories at your level arrive every morning at 09:00, and have two buttons, Turn on notifications and Not now. Turn on notifications asks your phone for notification permission if it has not been given yet; if you allow it, the app turns on the daily reminder at 09:00 your local time and the evening reminder. Not now leaves the permission unasked. After your first Not now on a card, the card comes back once, three days later. If you refused the permission before, the screen after the update offers Open Settings instead; if you allow notifications there and come back, the app turns on both reminders. Once notifications are on, the screen or card shows the switch Also send news and announcements, which stays off until you turn it on. While the daily reminder is off, tapping Daily reminder in Me, Settings, Notifications turns notifications on in the same way.

Up to version 1.2, one notification screen turns notifications on. It opens from the reminder card on Today, and from the Daily reminder row in Me, Settings, Notifications while the reminder is off. On it you pick the hour of your daily reminder, and it says what turning notifications on brings: the day's stories at that hour, an evening reminder on a day you have not finished a quiz yet while you have a streak, and rare notices about the service itself. Below that is a box, Also send news and announcements, which stays unticked until you tick it. The button asks your phone for notification permission once. If you allow it, the app turns on the daily reminder and the evening reminder, and announcements only if you ticked the box. If you do not allow it, nothing is turned on and the app works as before.

After that, Me, Settings, Notifications has three switches, Daily reminder, Evening reminder and Announcements, and each one turns on and off on its own. From version 1.2.1, tapping Daily reminder there while it is on opens two wheels, for the hour and for the minute in steps of five minutes, to change its time, and Turn off the daily reminder. If notifications for Newlings are off in your phone settings, the section says so and how to turn them back on.

The daily reminder, service notices and announcements are sent through Firebase Cloud Messaging, which gives the app on your phone a registration token. We do not store this token in our database: we send each message to a topic, and your phone receives the messages of the topics it has joined. Announcements and service notices go to topics that many phones share, and so does the daily reminder up to version 1.2. The evening reminder goes to a topic of your own account, and from version 1.2.1 the daily reminder does too (see Daily reminder and Evening reminder). On Android phones, Firebase Cloud Messaging may create the token when the app first starts, before you turn anything on; the phone joins no topic, so it receives nothing, until you do. On iPhone and iPad, these messages reach your device through Apple Push Notification service, which uses a device token from Apple. The picture in the daily reminder comes from our own storage. Up to version 1.1.0 the evening reminder is made on your phone and uses none of these services.

Test versions shared with testers through TestFlight before 1.1.0 (14) had only the daily reminder. If you turned it on there, it stays on at the same hour after you update and announcements stay off. The evening reminder stays off until you answer a one-time question on Today after you finish a quiz; the app keeps your answer on this phone, also when you switch to another account, and does not ask again there until you sign out or delete your data.

Test versions 1.1.0 (14) and 1.1.0 (15) also had a hidden switch for our own test messages, which subscribed the phone to the topic "announcements-test". The topic contains nothing about you, and the App Store version has no such switch. A phone on which the switch was turned on stays on that topic after the update until you sign out, delete your data or switch to another account.

Daily reminder

From version 1.2.1, the daily reminder comes at the time you choose, 09:00 your local time unless you change it. When you turn it on, the app subscribes your device, through Firebase Cloud Messaging, to a topic of your own account whose name holds your anonymous id ("daily-" followed by the id), and to the topic "reminder-notices" for the service notices described below, which many phones share and which contains nothing about you. The app saves the time you chose with your profile, together with the same time in UTC, and saves the UTC time again when your time zone or daylight saving time changes. Every five minutes our server looks for the learners whose reminder time it is and sends each of them the reminder on their own topic. Turning the reminder off, signing out, deleting your data or switching to another account makes your phone leave both topics, and turning it off also removes the time from your profile. After a switch, your phone joins the topics of the other account if its daily reminder is on.

From version 1.2.1, the app also records the time each time you open it or come back to it, at most once every 15 minutes (see Learner profile). Our server does not send your daily reminder on a day on which you already opened the app after the stories it would name were published, because you have already seen them. The day's stories are usually published at 06:00 Turkish time, and a reminder that comes before then names the stories of the day before. So in Turkey, a visit before 06:00 does not hold back a reminder at 06:00 or later, while any visit earlier the same day holds back a reminder set before 06:00. A visit on an earlier day in your time zone never holds the reminder back. The evening reminder does not depend on it and still comes as described below.

Up to version 1.2, the app subscribes your device instead to a reminder topic for one hour of the day (for example "reminder-utc-05"). That topic contains only the hour, not your id, so the reminder also comes on a day on which you have already opened the app. When your time zone or daylight saving time changes the hour, the app moves the subscription. Turning the reminder off, signing out or deleting your data removes the subscription. When you update to version 1.2.1 with the daily reminder on, it keeps its hour, and the app moves your device from the hour topic to the topics described above.

While your daily reminder is on, we may rarely send a notice about the service itself: an outage, maintenance, late stories or reminders, a required update, or a change to our terms of use or this policy. Up to version 1.2 it comes on the same subscription as the reminder; from version 1.2.1 it comes on the topic "reminder-notices", which your phone joins and leaves together with the daily reminder. We send at most one a day, to every reminder hour and the notice topic at once, so a notice may arrive at another time than your reminder. Service notices never promote anything, not even a new feature, and use nothing but the reminder subscription and, from version 1.2.1, the notice topic. Turning the reminder off stops them too.

Evening reminder

The evening reminder reminds you of your streak, at most once a day. It comes only on a day on which you have not finished a quiz yet while you have a streak: finishing one keeps the streak, and when you hold a streak freeze, it also leaves the freeze unused. It comes at 20:00 your local time, or two hours after your daily reminder hour when that is later, and it is never set later than 22:00, so a daily reminder at 21:00 or later brings no evening reminder. It comes within a few minutes of that hour, and at half past the hour in time zones whose offset from UTC is not a whole hour.

We send the evening reminder from our server. Every hour it uses the progress data we already keep for your streak (your streak, your streak freezes, the last day you were active, your reminder hour and your time zone) to find whose evening it is and whose streak one story that day would keep, and sends each of them the reminder through Firebase Cloud Messaging, to a topic of their own account whose name holds their anonymous id. Only a phone on which the evening reminder is turned on joins that topic, so the reminder reaches only your phones, and a quiz finished on any of them stops that evening's reminder on all of them. We collect no other data for it. Its text, which names the length of your streak, is shown in your phone's language from the app's own texts.

Up to version 1.1.0 the app makes the evening reminder on your phone instead: it works it out from the same progress data and asks your phone's notification system to show it that evening, nothing about it is sent to our servers, and Android phones may show it up to about an hour late.

To stop it, turn off Evening reminder in Me, Settings, Notifications. Signing out or deleting your data also makes your phone leave the topic; if you switch to another account, your phone joins that account's topic instead. On Android you can also silence the Evening reminder notification channel in your phone settings and keep the daily reminder.

Announcements

You can turn on announcements in two places: the Also send news and announcements box on the notification screen (from version 1.2.1 a switch on the notification screen or card, shown once notifications are on), or the Announcements switch in Me, Settings, Notifications. Both are off until you turn them on, and nothing in the app depends on them. Announcements bring news from Newlings, such as new features, stories and events, at most one a day and usually far fewer.

When you turn announcements on, the app asks for notification permission if you have not given it yet and subscribes your device, through Firebase Cloud Messaging, to the announcements topic of the language the app is shown in ("announcements-tr" for Turkish, "announcements-en" for English). The topic contains only the language, not your id. If the app's language changes, the app moves the subscription to the topic of the new language.

We keep a record of your choice with your profile: when you last turned announcements on and which version of the consent text the app showed you then, when you last turned them off, and the language of your topic. It shows that you agreed, and we use it to count how many learners will receive an announcement in each language. It is kept while you have a profile, also after you turn announcements off, and deleted when you delete your data.

To stop announcements, turn off Announcements in Me, Settings, Notifications; the app leaves the topic at once. Signing out or deleting your data also leaves it. On Android you can also silence the Announcements notification channel in your phone settings and keep the daily reminder.

The app can also show an announcement card on Today to everyone who opens it. Showing the card saves nothing to your profile; like every request from the app, reading it leaves only the short-lived server log described below. A card you close stays closed on your phone.

Word lookups

When you tap a word that has no card in the story, the app looks it up in our dictionary. If the word is not in the dictionary yet, our backend sends the word, the sentence it appears in and the language of the meaning to Google Cloud Vertex AI to write the entry. Your id and other learner data are not sent. The entry is then kept in the dictionary for all learners.

Search

When you search the stories, the words you type are sent to our database only to find matching stories. We do not save them with your profile. If you allow usage statistics, the search is recorded only as the number of results.

Fonts, story pictures and web pages

Other features

Server logs

When the app talks to our database and backend functions, Google Cloud logs each request with the IP address, the app's user agent and the time, and a log entry may include your anonymous id. Our monitoring also logged the beginning of feedback sent from the test versions described above. We use these logs only to serve the app, find errors and keep it secure. They are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Data stored on your device

The app keeps some data on your phone: your level, theme, placement progress, flashcard, layout and listening speed settings, your usage data answer, reminder, evening reminder, announcement, rating and update prompt settings, your answer to the one-time evening reminder question, from version 1.2.1 when the notification screen and the notification cards were shown and when you chose Not now on a card, the announcement cards you closed, a change to your announcements choice that could not be sent yet, and copies of recently opened stories so the app opens without a connection. It is removed when you delete your data, sign out or switch to another account (except your usage data answer, so a new start respects it, and, when you switch to another account, your evening reminder setting). An evening reminder waiting to be shown stays on your phone until it is shown, or until you turn it off, sign out or delete your data.

Your phone also keeps the downloaded fonts, a cache of story pictures and the data the Firebase components keep for themselves. Deleting your data in the app does not clear them; the picture cache removes old pictures over time, and removing the app removes them. On iPhone and iPad, the system may keep the app's sign-in after the app is removed, so reinstalling the app on the same device may bring your anonymous progress back.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your contacts, precise location, photos, microphone or camera data, or payment details. We do not ask for your age or date of birth, and the app has no location permission. We do not use advertising identifiers and never ask to track you. The iOS app is built without the advertising identifier code of Firebase Analytics, and the Android app turns off advertising ID collection and ad personalisation signals.

Our website and email

Our website, newlings.app, is a set of plain pages. They set no cookies, run no scripts, contain no forms, analytics or trackers, and load nothing from other websites. Firebase Hosting (Google) serves them and, like any web server, receives your IP address and browser details to deliver each page. Test versions of the app up to 1.1.0 (15) open copies of the same pages on the website of our control panel, which Firebase Hosting serves in the same way.

Link preview pages: when someone shares the link of a story (newlings.app/app/story/...) and the app is not installed, the page that opens is made by one of our Google Cloud functions in Belgium. It shows only what the app already shows to everyone: the story's title, its opening paragraph, its cover with the credit, and where it comes from. It sets no cookies, runs no scripts and loads nothing from other websites. Like every call to our servers, the request is written to a log with the address that was asked for, your browser's name, your IP address and the time; Google keeps these logs for 30 days and we read them only to find faults.

Email to hello@newlings.app passes through Cloudflare Email Routing to the mailbox we use at Apple's iCloud Mail, and we answer from our iCloud Mail address. We use your email and the details in it only to answer you and handle your request.

How the stories are made with AI

Newlings stories are rewritten with AI (Google Cloud Vertex AI, Gemini models) from facts reported by named sources, and some story images are generated with AI and labelled as such. Every story is checked before it is published. For the rewriting, Vertex AI receives only the public source reports and our instructions, never learner data.

For its Firebase and Google Cloud services, including Vertex AI, Google processes data on our behalf under the Google Cloud and Firebase data processing terms. Google Fonts, the sign-in providers, Apple, Cloudflare and the publishers handle what reaches them under their own terms and privacy policies. We do not sell or share your data with anyone else, except where the law requires it.

Where your data is processed

Our database, backend functions, storage and database exports are in Google Cloud's europe-west1 region in Belgium. Some services work in other countries, including the United States: Firebase Authentication, Cloud Messaging, Firebase Hosting for our website, the server logs and, if you allow them, Analytics and Crashlytics; Vertex AI, which we use at Google's global location, so Google may process a dictionary lookup in any of its regions; Google Fonts; Apple Push Notification service; Cloudflare; iCloud Mail; and the websites of the stories' sources, such as NASA in the United States. We run Newlings from Turkey, so we also view data from there, for example in our control panel.

For data from the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, transfers to Google rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and the UK equivalents included in Google's data processing terms; Apple and Cloudflare apply the safeguards in their own terms. For data from Turkey, transfers abroad are made under Article 9 of the Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK), which allows them with appropriate safeguards, such as the standard contract approved by the Personal Data Protection Board. To get a copy of the safeguards we rely on, email hello@newlings.app.

Legal bases

You need to give us your profile and learning activity for Newlings to work: without them the app cannot show stories at your level or keep your progress. Everything else is optional: usage statistics and crash reports, notifications, announcements and linking an account.

We collect personal data electronically: through the app, our backend and the services listed above, and through the emails you send us.

How long we keep data

Delete your account and data

Open Me, then Account, then Delete account and data. The app explains what will be deleted and asks you to confirm. It then:

  1. deletes your learner profile and everything linked to your id: placement answers, saved words and reviews, reads, level flags, feedback from test versions, quiz answers, grammar cards, notification offers, XP, active days, badges and the record of your announcements choice;
  2. stops your daily reminder, your evening reminder and announcements;
  3. if you linked Sign in with Apple, revokes the app's access to your Apple account;
  4. deletes your Firebase Authentication account and signs you out of Google on the device;
  5. clears the data stored on your phone, except your usage data answer, and starts a new anonymous id.

This cannot be undone. If your phone has no connection, nothing is deleted and the app asks you to try again.

If you link a Google or Apple account that already has Newlings progress, the app offers to switch to that account. Switching deletes the anonymous progress on this phone in the same way; the account's own progress is kept.

Deleting does not remove the fonts and story pictures kept on your phone (see Data stored on your device), or copies in database exports until those are deleted (see How long we keep data). Usage statistics, crash reports and server logs already recorded are not linked to your name and expire as described above. After the deletion we can no longer tell which of them were yours, so if you want your usage statistics deleted sooner, email hello@newlings.app from the address of your linked account before you delete your data.

If you cannot open the app, email hello@newlings.app. If you linked an Apple or Google account, write from its email address or tell us which one it is. If you used Newlings only anonymously, we cannot find your progress from an email alone, because the app does not show your learner id. Tell us the device and the approximate dates you used the app, and we will try, but we may not be able to find it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the KVKK, you have the right to:

You can change your level, translation language and settings, withdraw your consents and delete your data in the app yourself. For anything else, email hello@newlings.app. If you linked an Apple or Google account, write from its email address or tell us which one it is, so that we can find your data. If you use Newlings only anonymously, we cannot tell from an email which data is yours, because the app does not show your learner id; to get a copy of your data, link an Apple or Google account in the app first and then write to us from its email address. We may ask for more information to make sure a request comes from you. We answer within 30 days, free of charge.

If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to a data protection authority:

Children and young people

Newlings is for people aged 13 and over. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. The app does not ask for your age. If we learn that a child under 13 has used Newlings, we delete the data we can find.

If you are 13 to 17, or under the age of majority where you live, you may use Newlings only with the permission of a parent or guardian. Please read this policy and our Terms of Use with them.

Young people cannot agree on their own to some processing of their data online until they reach an age set by the law where they live: for example between 13 and 16 in the European Union, depending on the country, and 13 in the United Kingdom. If you are under that age, a parent or guardian must give or approve the two consents in the app: Allow for usage statistics and crash reports, and announcements. If they have not agreed, choose Don't allow and leave announcements off; the app works the same without them.

Newlings has no ads, no chat and no public profile, and learners cannot see or contact each other. Usage statistics, notifications and announcements are off until they are turned on, and the app has no location permission.

A parent or guardian can delete a young person's data at any time: on the young person's phone, open Me, Account, Delete account and data. You can also email hello@newlings.app. If an Apple or Google account is linked, tell us its email address. If the app is used only anonymously, we cannot find the data from an email alone, because the app does not show the learner id, so deleting in the app is the sure way; otherwise, tell us the device and the approximate dates of use, and we will try to find and delete the data.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit and stored with Google Cloud. Database rules let each learner read and change only their own data, and our control panel is open only to accounts we authorise. No system is perfectly secure; if you find a problem, tell us at hello@newlings.app.

Changes to this policy

We update this page when what we collect or how we use it changes, and change the date at the top. If a change affects you significantly, we tell you in the app before it takes effect, and we ask for your consent again where the law requires it.
