Newlings support

Newlings is an app for people aged 13 and over who learn English by reading short science, technology and art news at their level. Users aged 13 to 17, or under the age of majority where they live, need a parent's or guardian's permission (see the Terms).

Common questions

How do I change my level? Open Me, Settings, Reading level, or accept a level suggestion after a quiz.

How do I keep my progress on a new phone? Open Me, Account and continue with Apple or Google before you switch phones, then sign in with the same account on the new phone.

How do I turn notifications on? From app version 1.2.1: tap Turn on notifications where the app offers it (on its own screen once after you choose your level or after an update, at the end of a story, on the quiz result or on Today), or tap Daily reminder in Me, Settings, Notifications, and allow notifications if your phone asks. This turns on the daily reminder at 09:00 your time and the evening reminder. Announcements stay off: turn on Also send news and announcements on the same screen or card, or Announcements in Me, Settings, Notifications, only if you want them. If you refused notifications before, first allow them for Newlings in your phone settings (see below), then tap Daily reminder. In app versions 1.1.0 (14) to 1.2: tap the reminder card on Today, or Me, Settings, Notifications, Daily reminder. Pick an hour, tick Also send news and announcements only if you want them, and allow notifications when your phone asks. This turns on the daily reminder and the evening reminder, and announcements only if you ticked the box. Each one can then be turned off on its own in Me, Settings, Notifications.

How do I change the reminder time? From app version 1.2.1: Me, Settings, Notifications, tap Daily reminder, turn the hour and minute wheels (the minutes go in steps of five) and tap Save. In app versions 1.1.0 (14) to 1.2: Me, Settings, Notifications, Daily reminder, then pick an hour. The line under Evening reminder shows when the evening reminder comes with that time.

How do I stop the daily reminder? From app version 1.2.1: Me, Settings, Notifications, tap Daily reminder, then Turn off the daily reminder. In app versions 1.1.0 (14) to 1.2: Me, Settings, Notifications, Daily reminder, off. In app versions before 1.1.0 (14): Me, Settings, Daily reminder, off.

Why did no daily reminder come today? From app version 1.2.1, Newlings does not send the daily reminder on a day on which you already opened the app after the stories it would bring were published, because you have already seen them. The day's stories usually appear at 06:00 Turkish time, and a reminder set before then brings the stories of the day before, so in Turkey any visit earlier that day holds it back. The evening reminder still comes on a day on which you have not finished a quiz yet while you have a streak. If you had not opened the app, check that notifications for Newlings are allowed in your phone settings and that Daily reminder shows a time in Me, Settings, Notifications.

How do I stop the evening reminder? From app version 1.1.0 (14): Me, Settings, Notifications, turn off Evening reminder. It comes only on a day on which you have not finished a quiz yet while you have a streak. Up to app version 1.1.0 your phone makes it, so turning it off stops it at once, also without a connection. In later versions Newlings sends it from its server to the phones on which it is turned on, so turning it off needs a connection; without one, the app tries again the next time you open it. On Android you can also silence the Evening reminder notification channel in your phone settings and keep the daily reminder.

What are notices about the service, and how do I stop them? While the daily reminder is on, Newlings may rarely send a notice about the service itself, such as an outage, late stories or a required update, at most one a day. It never promotes anything, not even a new feature. Up to app version 1.2 it comes on the same subscription as the daily reminder; from 1.2.1 on a notice topic that your phone joins and leaves together with the daily reminder. Turn the daily reminder off to stop them (see above).

How do I stop announcements? From app version 1.1.0 (14): Me, Settings, Notifications, turn off Announcements. Announcements are off until you turn them on. On Android you can also silence the Announcements notification channel in your phone settings and keep the daily reminder.

How do I stop all notifications? Turn off notifications for Newlings in your phone settings (on an iPhone: Settings, Notifications, Newlings; on most Android phones: Settings, Apps, Newlings, Notifications). The app then says in Me, Settings, Notifications that notifications are off. Signing out or deleting your data in the app also stops the daily reminder, the evening reminder and announcements on that phone.
